How long is police college in NZ?

Recruits at the college undergo a rigorous 16 week training course. There are around six intakes (called “wings”) of recruits admitted each year.

What are typical police shifts?

The most common shift though is the twelve hour shift rotation. With this, typically, there will just be a day and a night shift, also known as the “alpha” and a “bravo” shift. They will rotate in and out, with different squads coming in at different times.

Can you join police with tattoos?

Any tattoos which appear to be discriminatory, offensive or provocative will not be accepted. Facial piercings are not permitted because they are considered to undermine the dignity and authority of a police officer. There are also implications for an officer’s safety.

Can you join police at 50?

You must be 18 or over when you apply to be a new Police Constable. The upper age limit is 57. This is three years less than the compulsory retirement age of 60 and allows for the two year probationary period and the expectation of a minimum of one year of service following probation.

Do I need a degree to join the police?

Yes, as above, the Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship (PCDA) does not require you to have a degree. However, you will be working towards the completion of a professional degree-level apprenticeship as part of this entry route which will need to be successfully completed prior to being confirmed in post.
